Tips on choosing your domain
Try to get a .com domain rather than .net, info, org domains. Search engines tend to favour .com domains. Whenever you make a search in Google you will see that the top 10 search engine listing tends to be a .com domain
Include your main keyword in your domain name. Do a search in Google for “Cheap domains”. See how the top ranked websites have the keywords in the domain.
Avoid hyphen. It is better to have a domain like “Cheapdomain.com” than “cheap-domain.com”. It seems that SEs are now penalizing domains with a hyphen. Moreover people coming to your website may later forget to include the hyphen in the domain.
Choosing a web hosting company
Before making a choice on webhosting, you first need to know about the 3 Levels of webhosting.
1. Shared hosting
This is the cheapest form of paid hosting. Your site hosting is being shared by hundreds or thousands of other websites. A problem with any of the sites can potentially affect your own site. However this would almost never happen with a reliable web hosting company. Shared hosting is the most popular form of web hosting that people use as this is enough for most beginner to intermediate webmasters.
2. Reseller Hosting
This is hosting is ideal if you have more than one website and you also wish to resell web hosting services. For instance you could have a reseller hosting of 20 GB and paying $20 per month. You can split this disk space into 40 web hosting packages of 500mb each and resell each package for $4/month each. Using this example you will be making about $120/month of profit. But you will quickly find that the competition is really tough as you will have to compete with hosting giants with huge servers.
3. Virtual Private Server
A virtual private server commonly known a VPS is a method of partitioning a physical server into multiple servers. Each will function and will have the capabilities of a dedicated server. VPS Hosting is a much more affordable solution than a dedicated server. It offers similar benefits to a dedicated server such as root access.
Compared to a reseller hosting you have much more control over your own server. You can reboot it, and you are normally given a full Web Hosting Manager (WHM)/CPanel whereas a reseller account gives you an extremely limited “reseller” version of WHM/CPanel.
Popular VPS :
Slhost.com – I would highly recommend SLHost. I have been hosting my websites with them and I find the technical support to be extremely fast and the staff are very helpful.
This is the gold standard of web hosting, giving you 100% control as you are the owner of the server. The price varies greatly but is usually more than $50 per month. You will notice some dedicated servers at a fraction of the cost of others. The catch is that the price varies greatly according to the level of support :
“Fully managed” (Most Expensive) – Includes monitoring, software updates, reboots, security patches and operating system upgrades. Customers are completely hands-off.
“Unmanaged” (least Expensive)- Little to no involvement from service provider.Customers provide all maintenance, upgrades, patches, and security.
Popular Dedicated Server Providers
Liquidweb.com – Start at $149
